Youth Opportunities Unlimited aims to provide a stable home for youth, young moms, and moms to be at the most vulnerable time in their lives. Located in Central London, Joan’s Place will provide safe and affordable homes for those experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness, and will act as an integrated program hub focused on primary and mental healthcare, education, employment and training, addicting services, and housing. Volunteers, partners, and staff resources will work together to offer mentoring, community engagement, supportive parenting, and personal development. Joan’s Place, located at 329, 331, and 333 Richmond Street, will extend a pilot currently being run at YOU’s existing supportive housing building in Downtown London (the ‘Cornerstone’). YOU is seeking to develop a supportive home in a new 39 unit building for youth and young mothers. The building will be comprised of accessible one-bedroom and two-bedroom self-contained units as well as ancillary space for YOU’s programming. The ground floor will house YOU’s administrative offices and partner programming through the Youth Wellness Hub.
Joan’s Place is more than just housing – it’s about creating a home. It’s about wrapping people with the supports they need. It’s about helping people build the skills so they can become contributors to the community that they want to be.”– Dr. Arlene MacDougall, Psychiatrist, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.
A community where youth are embraced and will thrive.
YOU supports youth to build skills, confidence and independence to reach their potential.
In all it does, YOU remains:
Supported by an $8.2 million campaign for the future. With hope and stability today, wellness, skills, and confidence can be built for the future.
Joan’s Place is designed to serve youth, young moms, and moms to be who are at risk of homelessness and are in need of affordable housing with supports in the downtown London area. In most cases, this property would be promoted to potential tenants between the ages of 16 and 24 who are receiving Ontario Works support and young singles with low-income.
YOU is a non-profit, registered charity which has been providing youth-focused services in London, Ontario and Middlesex County since 1982; helping 3,000 young people annually achieve educational, training, employment and personal development goals.
Our request is simple: learn about Joan’s Place and the incredible services it will provide to youth. Help us reach our goal by giving generously and asking others to do the same. Many drop-in youth clients are homeless, early school leavers or precariously housed. One person without a home is too many. These youth are living with layers of trauma and challenges that require immediate and long term supports like primary and mental healthcare, addiction services, education, housing, and employment and training. There is an immediate need to upgrade the support system to serve the 300-350 youth who visit YOU each month. Our community goal to raise $8.2 million will help us provide the independence and opportunity for at risk youth, young moms and moms to be.
